The material I chose for this project is the movie Split, which tells the story of a man with 23 different characters who kidnapped and imprisoned three girls in an isolated underground facility. One of his dark characters manifested in his mind and led him to eventually turn into a ruthless and homogeneous anti-social with superhuman power. Kevin was originally a kind, friendly person, but his tragic experience of being abused by his mother in childhood led to his personalities split, and eventually to the path of crime. Kevin's body chemistry changes with each person's personality, leading to his twenty-forth and final character "The Beast": a grotesque and homogeneous food anti-social with superhuman ability, such as inhuman power, improved speed and agility, as well as near impeccable and unnatural mobility, allowed him to expand the wall, but it led to his insatiable desire for primitive human flesh. This personality turned Kevin into a complete monster. At the end of the movie, Kevin noticed many old scars on Casey, including traces of attempted suicide by self-harm; this stems from Kathy’s childhood, since his father’s unfortunate death, many years of experience with her uncle invade. Seeing this, he felt the similarities between him and Casey and decided to let her go. After watching this movie, the thing that I loved is the great difference between Kevin and his other personalities, as well as the communication between each of them, and how the other personalities was influenced according to what Kevin experienced. In the movie, all the personalities that Kevin created were to protect him from getting hurt from the surroundings, because of his weakness, he was eventually swallowed up by other personalities and turned into a murderous monster. However, Kevin was always kind. In the middle of the movie, Kevin was called out by Casey, he not only helped her, but also hoped that she could kill himself who had lost control, this shows that Kevin still has conscience and humanity. The thing I didn’t like is too many personalities make the plot a bit confusing, and movies can't introduce them one by one. Having twenty three personalities and even super powers really makes Kevin different, but it also means it's not realistic. I hope that in my adaptation, the plot and characters will be closer to reality and more representative of people with schizophrenia. Furthermore, the adaptation will make the characteristics of the monster more obvious, in other words, the protagonist should be able to distinguish and control his behavior, rather than being manipulated. In the end, I will give the protagonist less personalities, and focus on the description of each personality, so that the story can not only be more real, but also can be described more clearly. Unlike the novels and movies that we have learned before, the time of the movie Split focuses in the 21st century, which people's ideas have changed. We will not treat dissidents as sin, and in most cases, we will help them. Kevin has a psychiatrist, and he has been receiving treatment on a regular basis, but this has not prevented him from embarking on a criminal path, and the psychiatrist has become the passive one and was killed by Kevin. Compared with the original, today's society gives all people relatively fair conditions and opportunities, and the stories I create will also be based on this. Its significance is to let people realize that what really terrible is not the devils or the ghosts, but more of the human heart.
